Spring 2022
-Karla participated in the Graduate Student Professional Development Workshop (and camping trip) as part of a new UCSC-CSUMB partnership sponsored by an USDA-HSI grant.
- Grace and Sarah were admitted into research summer internships at Cornell and UCSC, respectively. Congrats!
- Morgan was admitted into a PhD program at the University of Washington in Seattle, and will be working in Dr. Sharon Doty's Plant Microbiology Lab. Congrats Morgan, can't wait to hear about all the cool stuff you will be doing.
- Destiny Henderson-Hudgins, Sarah Kuykendall, Caitlyn Morgan, Emily Locke-Paddon, Robbie Medina, Paola Cabezas, Daniel Espinoza, and Nancy Rodriguez are joining the lab. Welcome!
- Harold Hickey started teaching as a lecturer in BIOC Department
Fall 2021
- JP was interviewed by KION546 to talk about INSV and Pythium Wilt
- Morgan won 2nd place in the UROC Fall Research Competition. Great job Morgan!
- Camila Baal and Arianna Nava, and Jakob Upmeier join the lab. Welcome!

Summer 2021
- Morgan received the Monterey County Historical Society Albert Jensen Scholarship, and Graces was selected as one of the CSU ARI Research Fellows. Congrats to both!
- Rachel Richardson from Penn State University visited the lab and collected samples of white button mushrooms infected with bacterial blotch. Rachel also share with the group her experiences transition from an PUI (CSU Channel Islands) to a large R1 institution like PSU.
- Karla and Cassandra presented their research at Plant Health 2021 meeting, and Morgan and Grace presented at the UROC virtual symposium.
- JP presented an overview of Pythium wilt of lettuce at the 2021 INSV and Pythium Update Meeting.
- Grace Hardy, Alyssa Diaz and Morgan Raimondo join the lab (in-person).
Spring 2021
- 3 AGPS students (Miguel Gomez, Julissa Hernandez, and Tony Tapia) were chosen to participate in the USDA 2021 Future Leaders in Agriculture Forum.
- JP was invited to present in the Pest Management Webinar for Spanish speakers organized by the Oregon Association of Nurseries titled "Manejo Integrado de Plagas para Plantas de Viveros".
- JP participate in an episode of the What to Be KSQD radio and podcast. Episode recording here.
- Grace Hardy was selected as one of the 2021 UROC Scholars.
Fall 2020
- JP gave a lecture at Fresno State focusing on Fresh Produce Safety.
- Karla Jasso and JP's research on Pythium wilt was featured in an article from the Monterey County Weekly highlighting the pest and disease challenges of the local lettuce industry.
- JP gave a lecture at CSUB focusing on Pathogen Suppressive Soils.
- JP was interviewed by the Monterey County Weekly in an article highlighting the new Agricultural Plant and Soil Science Major at CSUMB.
- Karla Jasso receive a travel award to participate in the 2020 SACNAS meeting (virtual).
- JP gave a lecture at Perdue University focusing on Plant Pathology Research at a PUI.
- Anna Herrera joined the lab as a MS student. Anna's main interest is in Seed Health and associated microbiome.

Summer 2020
- JP has received funding from the CSU-Agricultural Research Institute to conduct research on soilborne pathogens of leafy and allium crops.
- JP participated in the Plantopia podcast Episode 7: “Willie Nelson's Bag of Spinach” focusing on fresh produce safety.
- Cassandra Tice receives a research fellowship from the CSU-Agricultural Research Institute to conduct work on Pythium wilt of lettuce.
- Karla Jasso was selected as one of the 2020 Summer UROC Researchers to conduct work on using synthetic transparent soil to grow lettuce plants.
Spring 2020
- JP's new publication on Metadata standards for Agricultural microbiome research is featured in Eurekalert.
- JP has received funding from the California Leafy Greens Research Board to study the Biology and Control of Pythium wilt of lettuce. In this grant we will collaborate with Richard Smith from UCCE Monterey County and with Steve Koike from TriCal Diagnostics. So excited to start working on this project.
- JP has received funding from the California Garlic and Onion Research Advisory Board to study the potential for ASD and microbial inoculants to control white rot. Yay first grant as a PI!!!
- Cassandra was chosen for the USDA Future Leaders in Agriculture Program and got to go to attend the USDA 2020 Agricultural Outlook Forum in Washington DC. Check out the Monterey Herald article “CSUMB student named to USDA Future Leaders in Agriculture Program”. Congrats Cassandra!!!
- Karla Jasso, Josh Fuentes and Ben Williams are the new members of the lab, and join our senior-most member Lucy Smith as independent study students. Welcome all!!!
- Both Cassandra Tice and Grace Hardy have been offered position as a UROC Researcher to work in the lab. Cassandra will work on Pythium wilt of lettuce and Grace on INSV-Sclerotinia interactions. Congrats Cassandra and Grace!!!
